Here is an idea that we heard about from Matt Hartzmann, a member of the Technology Leaders Association.
Sometimes it can be difficult for a company to decide what they want in a CFO or other position. Sure they have a laundry list. But what is really important? Chemistry for sure, but is there anything else that will allow one candidate to break from the pack?
You could help them in the process. Have them take a trip to Moscow. Not that Moscow as in the city, but this Moscow:
Must have
O
Should have
Could have
O
Would like to have
Use this to help them sort out the bullet points.
Everyone should have the must, and probably all the semifinalists will have the should have.
If you can, should them you are strong in the could have. Likewise, let them know that if they bring you on board, the would like to have is not a wish.
You might have some other strengths that did not show up on the list. Move them from off the table into the W list. Make the other candidates scramble to catch up.
We probably all have seen at least one case where the deciding factor was not anything at all on the bullet points.
That is a comment we hear more often. Companies are getting pickier. They are moving all 10 bullets to the must have list. You need to show what else you bring.
Use the Moscow format to help them focus what they are looking for. If nothing more, we think they will be very impressed with your thought process. |
